Major Brandon Russell, of Butler County EMS, was in town to provide training for Norwich EMS. His training consisted of two parts;
The first part was training in a new skill that has been authorized by the Kansas Board of EMS for all providers at or above the EMT level. That skill being the prehospital usage of a cpap device for those in respiratory distress, particularly those with congestive heart failure. CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Air Pressure, and the device aids the patient in respiratory distress in breathing. Commonly used for pulmonary edema, copd, and sometimes, asthma if nothing else can work.
In addition to cpap, Brandon gave a review of ECG analysis and easy streetwise methods of quickly recognizing certain heart disrythmias. He will continue the series at a future date.
Many thanks to Brandon for travelling the distance from El Dorado to Norwich to present this invaluable information, and many thanks to those volunteers who came and learned new skills and reviewed old ones....in order to provide better patient care.
